The Name

This house is named after a man, not a style.

In 1957 Giuseppe Ercolano opened a workshop in Sorrento and became the first of his family to make marquetry rather than sell it. Three generations later, his grandson carries the same name and keeps the same benches working. Everything on these pages begins at that first bench.

The Craft

Cut, inlaid, lacquered, polished

Seven woods — maple, walnut, dark mahogany, ash, walnut burl, bubinga, oak — dyed in twelve colours, cut with the fretsaw and laid piece by piece into the surface. Five coats of lacquer follow, each polished by hand. The method has not changed; only the hands have.
