Utopia
Deep-toned woods under hand-polished lacquer. The darkest register the workshop cuts, and the one that shows the depth of the finish best.
The pattern
Depth before contrast
Utopia is built from the darker end of the wood store: walnut, dark mahogany and burl, dyed and cut with the fretsaw, laid so that the pattern is read in tone rather than in colour. Five coats of lacquer are polished over it by hand, and it is on a dark ground that the depth of that finish is easiest to see.
The collection runs to two pieces, a jewelry box in three sizes and a desk frame, both cut and lacquered in the same Sorrento workshop.
Seven patterns, one bench
Each collection is a different drawing cut by the same hands, in the same Sorrento workshop.
