Zag
A multicoloured zigzag cut from dyed woods and inlaid by hand. The boldest pattern on the bench, and the one that surprises people who thought they knew Sorrento marquetry.
The pattern
Tradition at a sharper angle
Zag takes the same seven woods, the same twelve dyes and the same fretsaw that produce the classical patterns, and drives them into a repeating zigzag that runs across lid, sides and base without a break. Aligning the colour sequence around the corners of a box is the hardest cutting the workshop does; the piece is finished, as all of them are, under five hand-polished coats of lacquer.
The collection runs across five objects: a jewelry box in three sizes, a backgammon set in travel and full size, a chess box, a cedar-lined cigar humidor and a desk frame.
Seven patterns, one bench
Each collection is a different drawing cut by the same hands, in the same Sorrento workshop.
