The pattern
A map cut from seven woods
The Columbus pattern is a world map in marquetry, and the collection is named for the navigator, not for a style. Continents, seas and the compass lines are cut separately from maple, walnut, dark mahogany, ash, walnut burl, bubinga and oak, dyed where the drawing needs a colour the wood does not give, then laid piece by piece into the surface and finished under five hand-polished coats of lacquer.
It is the most traditional register the workshop cuts, and the one people recognise as Sorrento. The collection runs across three objects: a jewelry box in three sizes, a chess box that carries the map across its case, and a desk frame.
